Studies show that infants and young children have lower levels of melanin in their skin for natural protection, meaning their skin is more sensitive and vulnerable to sun damage if not properly protected. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Cancer Council Queensland recommend that all parents minimize sun exposure for young children during the first six months of life. Physical barriers such as hats and scarves are recommended as other sun protection products can cause reactions, especially those not specifically formulated for babies and young children.

As a brand that loves botanical ingredients, we're all about simplifying ingredient lists. When developing our latest product, Soleil Bébé Sunscreen, our main focus was to create something effective, but gentle enough for younger children.

Our sunscreen harnesses the benefits of zinc oxide, a commonly used ingredient in diaper rash creams, to unlock its potential as a protective component against the sun's rays. Specifically, we use uncoated zinc oxide, which stays on the skin's surface instead of being absorbed due to its superior UV ray blocking capabilities compared to coated zinc oxide, thus reducing the likelihood of irritation and allergies, making it suitable for various skin sensitivities and types.

Zinc oxide is the only FDA-approved filter that provides comprehensive protection against both UVA and UVB rays. On its own, it can serve as the primary active ingredient in your mineral SPF formula, making it a better choice for fighting premature aging, sunburn, and even the risk of skin cancer.

Another point we make sure is that we use a specific size of our zinc oxide which is non-nano and has particles larger than 100mm. Due to its size unlike nano zinc oxide, it only stays on the surface of the skin and has been proven to be an environmentally conscious ingredient as it causes minimal harm to marine life whereas nano zinc oxide can pose serious threats to the human body and leave harmful traces in the environment.

While other sunscreen products contain zinc oxide in their coated form, and even though they may be in non-nano sizes, it is still important to know what specific coating is being used as the coating may contain trace amounts of aluminum or other inert substances, usually triethoxycaprylylsilane, a silicone coating.

Experts recommend daily sun protection as an important skin care habit, using products like mineral day cream or sunscreen with zinc oxide is a smart move for all-round daily protection, regardless of skin type. It is a proven ingredient known for its effectiveness in sun protection, and it is considered the safest UV filter, as confirmed by the EWG (Environmental Working Group).

Other ingredients in our Soleil Bébé sunscreen include sunflower seed oil, jojoba oil and vitamin E. These additional ingredients serve to further nourish and protect your child's delicate skin. Sunflower seed oil moisturizes and helps maintain the skin's natural barrier, while jojoba oil provides soothing properties to help relieve potential irritation. Vitamin E, known for its antioxidant properties, helps fight off free radicals and aids skin repair.
