Ask Baie Botanique: How often should you use your scrub?
Exfoliation is considered an important step in any skincare routine. But what are the benefits, why should you exfoliate your face, is it suitable for every skin type, and how often should you exfoliate? Read on to find out.
The advantages:
Regular exfoliation offers many benefits for the skin. Regular exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells that can clog pores and lead to dry and dull skin. Exfoliation also stimulates cell renewal, increases blood circulation and evens out skin tone, leaving your skin looking bright, radiant and younger.
As we age, skin cells renew themselves more slowly, which is why peeling is particularly important in old age. Peeling ensures that the skin feels younger again and, with regular use, looks smoother day by day. Peeling is also suitable for younger skin, as it gives it a freshness boost and an instant glow.
Types of peelings
When choosing a peel, there are three types: physical, chemical and enzymatic peels. Physical peels are usually scrubs that are more abrasive, while chemical peels apply acidic substances that are more deep-drilling. And enzymatic peels are usually made of tiny molecules found in fruits that slough off dead skin from the surface of the skin. All three facial peels are effective, but in general, chemical peels provide more benefits to the skin, and enzyme peels are the gentlest.
How often should you use your peeling?
It is advisable not to use a physical exfoliant more than twice a week, whereas products containing chemical exfoliants can often be used every other night or even every evening. If you choose to use a chemical exfoliator, increase your use slowly so your skin can get used to the product over time. Chemical exfoliators such as BHAs (beta hydroxy acids) and AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) are very effective at lightening skin, but they can also be very aggressive, so start slowly and always follow the directions. Enzyme peels are the gentlest of all exfoliators and can be used daily or twice a day.
There are also other gentle methods that can be used regularly and with good effect, such as:
Muslin cleaning cloth
This can be especially useful when removing a skin cleansing product, such as Rose + Capuaçu Enzyme Cleanser , from the face to enhance the exfoliating effect. Use the muslin side of a cloth, such as our Dual-Action Facial Cleansing Cloth , and use medium circular motions over the face and neck with the skin cleanser, or just water for a deeper exfoliation.
Konjac sponge
Konjac sponges are ideal for removing dead skin cells without irritating healthy skin as they are very soft. This makes them a safe and effective alternative for people with sensitive skin and skin problems such as rosacea or other dry skin conditions. They work best when used in conjunction with the Rose Renew facial cleanser as the sponge helps the facial cleanser to lather up extra well.
When using the peeling methods mentioned above, you should pay particular attention to the most affected areas of the face around the nose and skin folds.
Our recommendations for chemical peels
Rose Renew Face Cream contains glycolic acid (an AHA) and provides daily gentle exfoliation to increase skin luminosity and remove dead skin cells. The addition of rosehip seed oil, rose water and rose absolute nourishes the skin and provides it with essential vitamins A and C. Co Q10, squalane and raspberry seed oil enhance the anti-aging effect. They reduce fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating collagen production and leaving the skin smooth and supple.
This gentle yet effective facial cream can be used day and night to stimulate skin cell turnover and provide the skin with nutrients and moisture.
The Rose Renew regenerating serum contains several natural exfoliating substances that explain why it brightens and smoothes the skin so well. Kojic acid, which also works as a mild AHA along with white willow bark, is a source of natural hydroxy acids that gently exfoliate the skin. The salicin in willow bark is a lipophilic beta hydroxy acid (BHA) that can penetrate the skin's oil and dissolve blackheads. Willow bark has keratolytic properties, meaning it breaks down dead skin cells and dissolves the pore-clogging impurities by gently exfoliating. Therefore, kojic acid also works as a pore shrinker. Our face serum also contains glycolic acid in a lower concentration than the face cream. Glycolic acid is derived from sugar cane and is the smallest AHA, so it can penetrate the skin most effectively.
We combine our willow bark extract (BHA) with glycolic acid (AHA) to reveal the newer, younger-looking cells beneath firmer, sun-damaged skin. This combination also stimulates collagen and elastin production to minimize fine lines and wrinkles.
The regenerating eye cream uses white willow bark in a much smaller amount than the serum to gently smooth and brighten the eye contour without causing irritation.
Our recommendations for enzyme peelings
The Rose + Capuaçu Enzyme Cleanser uses pomegranate enzymes. As the name suggests, the exfoliation is done with enzymes rather than abrasive granules or acids. Enzymes help break down the keratin in the upper layers of the skin by dissolving the bonds between the dead skin cells and essentially loosening them so they slough off. The enzymes literally digest the dead skin on your face.
Summary
As you can see from the explanations above, different exfoliants can be found in a wide range of facial care products, from skin cleansers to eye creams and everything in between. For cleansers that contain enzymes or acids, we recommend leaving them on for at least a minute to take effect.
Exfoliation can provide fantastic benefits for the skin. The best part is that when you use a beauty product with AHA or BHA additives, you don't need to add an extra step to your physical exfoliation routine with a scrub. Enzymes and acids are often used together for a combination peel.
